Things to buy

I’m on a bit of a spending freeze at the moment due to upcoming trips, so I thought I make a list of things I want to buy so I don’t forget about them 🙂

  • JetDriveâ„¢ 520 – Transcend
Probably the 960GB model to upgrade the storage in my ageing MacBook Air. It could do with a new battery too
  • Philips Hue or LIFX bulbs
Want to get into some automation with OpenHab so controlling a light off a alarm system PIR seemed light a good idea. Or some
  • Another Raspberry Pi 3
Currently have an Arduino for controlling the sprinklers. I want to replace it with something that can be controlled with calendars from a caldav server and connect straight to my automation MQTT server all by itself – EDIT think I’ll use the smarts in OpenHAB instead and just continue to use a “dumb” controller
  • DONE – Fancy camera, thinking Nikon P900 or P610
To take lots of pictures with on my trips, so won’t need it until closer to trip time. I have been using my phone as a camera for quite a few years now, but kinda want something with a proper zoom. Must have built-in GPS, none of this GPS only when paired with a smartphone crap.
  • DONE – Delorme (now Garmin?) inReach satellite communicator
On one of my 2017 trips I’m likely to be out of cellphone coverage for extended periods of time, just can’t have that 🙂
  • Very small “laptop”
By very small I mean 7, 8 or 9 inch screen. Needs to have a keyboard as I do a lot of stuff via the command line etc. Must be able to support itself in screen open laptop mode, ie you can just pick it up by the keyboard and it doesn’t flop around. Will probably end up being a tablet in a keyboard case as there doesn’t seem to be any laptops under 10″, which isn’t that much smaller than my current 11″ MacBook Air. MHL/HDMI output preferred, which rules out Samsung as for some bazaar reason they no longer support MHL in any of their products.
  • New Car
In 2018 my current car (Suzuki Swift) will be 10 years old, time for a new one I think. I’ve started putting money aside for it so should have plenty to spend come 2018. I have some requirements:

    • Manual transmission – if it hasn’t got a clutch pedal I’m not interested
    • “Small”, more car than SUV
    • 4 wheel drive would be nice, for the few times in its life that a bit more than 2WD would be nice to have
  • 2TB 2.5″ HDD to replace the existing tiny one in my UBNT NVR. I currently have the recordings going to a 2TB USB external HDD. Plan is to replace the internal HDD and install a fresh new current version install of Debian on it.
  • New fancier alarm system – either an InnerRange Inception or a ICT Protege-WX
