At Work
For the last 7+ years I have worked at Heller Tasty Ltd (now called Hellers Ltd) in an IT support role. Below are some of the things I have done while there.
•Cardax Security System
I assisted with the implementation of a Cardax FT security system including developing interfaces to and from the system. This included (limited) integration with our Mobotix security cameras.
•Warehouse/Dispatch “Scanning” system
I developed a telnet server application that mobile wireless computers with barcode scanners (we use Symbol PDT6800s and Symbol/Motorola MC90X0s) connect to to perform various warehouse and dispatch functions. This system interfaces with our Navision (Microsoft Dynamics NAV) ERP system. Functions available include sales order picking (including “sending” orders to the “gun” for picking orders without a paper pick sheet), transfer order picking, stock taking, recording the moving of stock between bins, shipping functions like freight pallets/pallet sheets etc. This involves a program written in Python running under Linux, various MS SQL and PostgreSQL queries and some stored procedures, SOAP webservice written in C#.NET, MSMQ message queues and code running in the Navision application server.
•Phone System replacement/upgrade
I investigated options for replacing the phone systems (including DECT) at our two sites and assisted with the implementation of the chosen ShoreTel VoIP system. I mostly now administer the system.
•Network upgrade
Upgraded the network from basic switches and hubs (!) to managed switches with multiple VLANs.
•WiFi Implementation
Implemented a “Wireless Switch” WiFi system. Originally with Symbol (now Motorola) gear, then when it was moved to our Auckland site a Foundry (Meru OEMed) system with Virtual Cell technology was installed. Originally just 3 access points for the scan guns (see above) it now encompasses a dozen access points, which will more than double with the building expansion, and is used for scan guns within both dispatch and the factory, laptops over the entire site and lately VoIP hand-held phones and smartphones.
•E-Mail server
Implemented/developed a Linux based email server with anti-spam, virus checking, multi-site/server capable with a web based management interface.
This has since been mostly replaced with a Microsoft Exchange 2007 server (with the existing Linux email server remaining between it and the Internet for anti-spam and virus checking functionality) and Blackberry server.
•Web Proxy
Implementation of a Linux based web proxy server with NTLM (now replaced with Kerberos) authentication and access restrictions.
•VPNs
Implemented VPN access to the company network using OpenVPN. Both “road warrior” single computer access and network to network connectivity for an offsite warehouse and as a backup for the site to site WAN connection.
•Mobotix security camera system
Assisted with the deployment/configuration of a Mobotix security camera system including some integration with our Cardax security and access system.
•EDI system
Created a simple system to handle EDI with Progressive Enterprises Ltd via ECN (purchase orders, purchase order acknowledgments, invoices and control messages) and freight manifests with Transotway and Foodstuffs Inbound (via eCargo).
•Time Clocks
Wrote a system to integrate ZKSoftware card time clock readers with our Cardax security system and ADITime software. Have since also made time clocks that read our MiFare security cards that we use with our Cardax security system and uploads the time clock “punches” up into ADITime in real time with feed back (clock in or out and week so far hours display after “punch”)
